Which K-Drama Should You Watch Next?

What’s the best way to measure how good a K-drama is? I would probably say you know by how late you stay up to watch “one more” episode. Seriously, if you’ve never heard the birds chirping BEFORE you go to sleep, you definitely need some recommendations.

My friend Sonya inspired this post. While undergoing treatment for breast cancer and also dealing with Crohn’s disease she wanted to make a list of K-dramas to watch during her recovery time.

Not to brag, but a couple of times I’ve saved Sonya. I’m not a doctor but I know my K-dramas. She started watching K-dramas during the pandemic and had a few hits and misses. When she was about to choose another random one I had to intervene. If you’re going to binge-watch 16-20 episodes you want to make sure you’re making the most out of your time. In all seriousness, Sonya has told me many times that K-dramas have saved her.

We were laughing about how much time we’ve invested in K-dramas and she said it can take her an hour just to weed through descriptions to pick one. I’ve found some of those descriptions and even their English title has actually made me not want to watch the K-drama because they’re misleading. Hopefully, this list will help you make better-informed decisions about what to watch next. Bookmark my K-Drama page to keep up with new entries.

Netflix and Viki are the easiest platforms that automatically play one episode after the other. Viki has a free version but I highly recommend the Viki Plus Pass. Do the 7-day free trial, then sign up for one of two annual passes (Standard or Plus) because it’s like getting two months free every year instead of paying monthly. Other streaming platforms include Amazon Prime, Hulu, and Disney+. Most Disney+ K-dramas released in Korea are only available in the U.S. on Hulu. There are a couple of sites that are a last resort when I can’t find a show anywhere else. They’re free with no commercials but it’s highly recommended you have an ad blocker extension on your browser. Otherwise, IGNORE—as in do NOT click on any ads or popups (don’t believe crazy warnings saying you need to update, scan, or download something to protect your computer). If a new tab opens when you push play, close that new tab and go back and push play again.

I recommend giving a K-drama at least 3-4 episodes before you bail on it. There are some K-dramas I’ve started that I quit watching but other people love. There are some dramas I started, stopped, came back to—then ended up loving. When a drama airs on Korean TV it’s usually one or two episodes each week so it’s the same on whichever streaming platform has the rights outside of Korea. Some people like to wait till all the episodes have been released so they can watch at their own pace.

Heo Joon-Jae (Lee Min-ho) scolding Shim Cheong (Jun Ji-Hyun) in Legend of the Blue Sea for staying up all night watching K-dramas. I love a K-drama within a K-drama storyline.

I welcome your comments on any K-dramas you’ve watched. Your comments could help others decide which K-drama they choose to watch next. Feel free to agree, disagree, and recommend. Good or bad, like or don’t like is so subjective. I might like something you don’t and vice versa. I hope this glimpse into my thoughts will help guide you if you feel overwhelmed by what to watch next.

You can see all my full reviews by clicking on K-Drama in the Topics menu. This list includes Korean movies and reality shows too. I can’t speak highly enough of Youn’s Stay and Jung Hae-In’s Travel Log. Reality television in Korea is not like America. Many of these shows feature some of your favorite actors and artists who are in the prime of their careers and are not scripted. If you need a mental health break, this is exactly what the doctor would order. It’s hard not to smile and laugh when they’re all so adorable.

I list the original Korean title in Hangeul after the English title. Some translations make the title different from the English title. I highly recommend you watch the subtitle version and not the dubbed version. You will miss so much if you do not hear the nuances in the original actors’ voices.

(√)= a K-drama I’ve watched more than once.

Keep scrolling and you’ll see a calendar with the schedule of K-dramas currently airing. If there’s a K-drama you’d like me to add to the calendar let me know in the comments.

  12. The Snow Queen - 눈의 여왕 - Released: 11/13/2006 Episodes: 16

This one took me a while to find. I really liked it because Hyun Bin is nothing like I’d seen him before. I read about a time when he made a public appearance and found himself crying. He apologized and said he had been filming a really emotional scene earlier in the day and the emotions were still with him. I wonder if this might be the drama he was filming when that happened. It made me respect how deep he goes in an effort to portray an authentic character.

  23. Train to Busan (MOVIE) - 부산행 Train to Busan - Released: 7/20/2016

If you like zombies you’ll like this. I had to watch this movie because it’s a Korean classic. And when I went to Korea—of course I took the train to Busan (the city where I was born)!

  24. Cinderella and the Four Knights (√) - 신데렐라와 네 명의 기사 - Released: 8/12/2016 Episodes: 16

  26. Midnight Runners (MOVIE) - 청년경찰 a youth police officer - Released: 6/20/2020 Episodes: 16

In the first few minutes of this movie I wondered if it was going to be college boy humor like Animal House—which I am not a fan of. But I love Park Seo-Jun and he didn’t disappoint. PSJ and Kang Ha-neul were kind of the Liam Neeson’s of this film.

  27. What’s Wrong With Secretary Kim (√) - 김비서가 왜 그럴까 - Released: 6/6/2018 Episodes: 16

This role is the complete opposite of Itaewon Class for Park Seo-Jun. I was stunned to see that he was able to portray both roles so convincingly. If I hadn’t already fallen for him in IC, this would’ve pushed me over the edge. Who would’ve thought there could ever be such a thing as a lovable narcissist? Loved the subtle nod in this drama to BTS and ARMY.

  28. City Hunter (√) - 시티헌터 - Released: 5/25/2011 Episodes: 20

Click on the title for the full review.

  29. Scent of a Woman - 여인의 향기- Released: 9/11/2011 Episodes: 16

I couldn’t believe this was the same actress who portrayed Sam Soon in My Lovely Kim Sam Soon. It was nice to see her in a more serious role and you can hardly go wrong when the male lead is Lee Dong-Wook.

  30. Was It Love - 우리, 사랑했을까 Did we love each other? Released: 7/8/2020 Episodes: 16

This may have been the first K-drama I didn’t care for from beginning to end. It might also be the one that inspired this post and list…

  31. Fight For My Way - 쌈, 마이웨이 Released: 5/22/2017 Episodes: 16

  41. Dream High (√)- 드림하이 - Released: 1/3/2011 Episodes: 16

This K-drama is very dated but I still enjoyed it. Gives you a glimpse into the K-pop trainee world. Kim Soo-Hyun was excellent. Introduced me to Taecyeon and IU. Park Jin-Young, the founder and CEO of JYP has a prominent role.

  42. The Moon Embracing the Sun (√) - 해를 품은 달 - Released: 1/4/2012 Episodes: 20

One of my favorite historical dramas. 15-year-old Yeo Jin-Goo and 13-year-old Kim Yu-Jeong were so excellent as the younger characters I didn’t want them to switch actors as the story progressed. I would love to see them play the older versions now that they’re grown up. But of course, Kim Soo-Hyun did not disappoint as Yeo Jin-Goo’s older counterpart.

  49. Coffee Prince - 커피 프린스 1호점 Coffee Prince’s First Store Released: Episodes:

  50. Sky Castle - SKY 캐슬 (SKY= Seoul National University, Korea University, Yonsei University) - Released: Episodes:

This K-drama was the only one that had higher ratings in Korea than Crash Landing On You (at the time CLOY aired) so of course I had to check it out. Korea is known for its high educational standards. That has both positive and negative consequences. Advantages are steeped in where you fall in the hierarchal ranks and Sky Castle gave me a not-so-pretty glimpse into this world. Taken with a grain of salt because it is a drama but knowing it’s based on real issues doesn’t make this an easy watch.

  51. Law School - 로스쿨 - Released: 4/14/2021 Episodes: 16

  56. Vagabond - 배가본드 - Released: 9/20/2021 Episodes: 16

  57. Healer (√) - 힐러 - Released: 12/8/2014 Episodes: 20

One of my favorite K-dramas that has a little bit of everything. When I rewatched with Taylor she immediately liked Ji Chang-Wook (no surprise there). I like Park Min-Young in this drama because she’s so natural and free-spirited. Love that Kim Mi-Kyung was cast as a high-tech hacker—she was totally believable. I would like to see her be given the chance to do more unpredictable roles like this. Overall another example of a good ensemble cast that also included Yoo Ji-Tae. Even as time passes this K-drama has held up well.

  58. Mine - 마인 - Released: 5/8/2021 Episodes: 16

This is the first K-drama I had not seen before I watched it with Taylor. She actually picked it. We found the characters very unlikable but forced ourselves to watch three episodes. And then we were hooked. We like the fact that it had such strong women characters. But IMHO it took them too many episodes to make us care about them. I like it when I see dramas take on social issues that are slowly changing in Korea. This K-drama proved my 3-episode rule is there for a reason.

  59. Her Private Life (√) - 그녀의 사생활 - Released: 4/10/2019 Episodes: 16

Click on the title for the full review.

  60. Melting Me Softly - 날 녹여주오 Please Melt Me - Released: 9/28/2019 Episodes: 16

First non-action K-drama featuring Ji Chang-Wook that I watched. The story of someone who’s been cryogenically frozen and “melted” 20 years later makes for a pretty interesting premise. I’m also a sucker for time-travel.

  61. Encounter (√) - 남자친구 Boyfriend - Released: 11/28/2018 Episodes: 16

When Taylor first started watching this one she said, “If you could bottle the cuteness of a puppy video into a person’s face, that’s Park Bo-gum.” He is quite adorable. And Encounter is pretty satisfying if you’re looking for something really romantic. It checks all the boxes.

  62. Search: WWW - 검색어를 입력하세요: WWW Please Enter a Search Term: WWW - Released: 6/5/2019 Episodes: 16

  63. Uncontrollably Fond - 함부로 애틋하게 - Released: 7/6/2016 Episodes: 20

Kim Woo-Bin really has a range when it comes to acting and he keeps you in the story whatever character he is playing. This K-drama is very heartwrenching so you need lots of tissues while watching.

  72. Fortress (MOVIE) - 남한산성 Namhansanseong Fortress Released: Episodes:

  73. The King’s Affection - 연모 Vellum Released: Episodes:

  74. Happiness - 해피니스 Released: Episodes:

  75. Now We Are Breaking Up - 지금, 헤어지는 중입니다 Released: Episodes:

This felt like a repeat of Encounter but not as good. The story wasn’t identical but the female lead character felt the same—or at least portrayed the same—by the same actress.

  76. The Red Sleeve - 옷소매 붉은 끝동 The Red End of the Sleeves - Released: Episodes:

  77. Mr. Sunshine (√) - 미스터 션샤인 - Released: Episodes:

The title of this drama gave me no desire to watch it. The photos looked like it was a military story which is also not something I readily gravitate towards. But I kept hearing people say they loved it so I finally gave in. And it’s now one of my favorites. I was glad to learn some Korean, American, and Japanese history—things we’d never learn in school. It also made me a fan of Lee Byung-hun and Kim Tae-ri. Another great ensemble cast includes Yeo Yoon-Seok, Kim Min-jung, Byun Yo-han, Lee Jung-Eun, Kim Eui-sung, and the list goes on…

  78. Dali and Cocky Prince (√) - 달리와 감자탕 Dali and Gamjatang - Released: Episodes:

The English title is so misleading. The Korean title is more fitting. I really enjoyed this drama. It’s the first one I saw with Kim Min-Jae as the male lead and he was pretty adorable and funny. Good chemistry with Park Gyu-young. Romance, mystery, and humor made it a fun watch overall.

  79. Move to Heaven (√) - 무브 투 헤븐: 나는 유품정리사입니다 Move to Heaven: I'm a memento janitor - Released: Episodes:

  80. Hospital Playlist (√) - 슬기로운 의사생활 A Wise Doctor's Life - Released: Episodes:

  81. Hospital Playlist Season 2 - 슬기로운 의사생활 A Wise Doctor's Life - Released: Episodes:

  82. Five Fingers FF - 다섯손가락 Released: 8/18/2012 Episodes: 30 SBS

I love Ji Chang-Wook but I did not love this drama. Around episode ten I checked to see if it was 16 episodes or 20. I immediately jumped to the last episode when I saw there were 30.

  83. Our Beloved Summer - 그 해 우리는 That Year, We... - Released: Episodes:

  84. The Silent Sea - (MOVIE) 고요의 바다 - Released: Episodes:

  85. Snowdrop - 설강화 Strengthening the Lunar New Year's Day/Snow Strengthing - Released: Episodes:

  86. Ghost Doctor (√) - 고스트 닥터 - Released: Episodes:

So this is Rain. I was enjoying this drama so much I looked up the lead actor and was surprised to see it was Jung Ji-hoon (aka Rain). I’d heard his name but didn’t really know who he was. Turns out he’s a singer, songwriter, dancer, actor, and record producer. The other male lead is Kim Beom, the cutie from Boys Over Flowers all grown up. When I first asked my oldest daughter to watch I had to convince her because she’s not very fond of hospital shows. Taylor liked it so much she convinced her sister to watch and Chlo also loved it. We all especially enjoyed the bromance—something K-dramas do so well.

  87. While You Were Sleeping - 당신이 잠든 사이 - Released: Episodes:

  88. Jung Hae-In’s Travel Log (√) - 정해인의 걸어보고서 Jung Hae-in's Walking Report (REALITY SHOW) - Released: Episodes:

Adorable. Even if you don’t know Jung Hae-In (from Something in the Rain or D.P.) you should watch this show. It’s his first time in NYC and watching his reactions to seeing things for the first time reminded me of my first trip to NYC. It also made me realize that I wasn’t going to look foolish having similar reactions on my first visit to Seoul. I got my daughter Taylor to watch and she fell in love with Jung Hae-In just from this show. Of course, Taylor convinced Chlo to watch and now everyone in the family loves Jung Hae-In. When we went to Korea for the first time we had to visit Halal Bros. in Itaewon because of Jung Hae-In. I don’t think a show like this would ever get the green light in Hollywood. But that’s exactly why you should watch it.

  89. Assassination - 암살 - Released: Episodes:

  90. Flower of Evil (√) - 악의 꽃 - Released: Episodes:

What is it about Lee Joong-gi that immediately draws you in? This show had me hooked and on the edge of my seat from the get-go. When my kids watched they too were drawn to Lee Joong-gi. When Chlo first started watching they said they weren’t sure if they were supposed to like his character—but they did. I was glad to know it wasn’t just me.

  91. Thirty Nine - 서른아홉 - Released: Episodes:

  92. Twenty Five Twenty One - 스물다섯 스물하나 - Released: 2/12/2022 Episodes: 16

Click on the title for the full review.

  93. Forecasting Love And Weather - 기상청 사람들: 사내연애 잔혹사 편 People from the Korea Meteorological Administration: The Cruel History of Office Love Released: Episodes:

The acronym for this is FLAW. That’s all I need to say. I did learn some things about the weather I didn’t know so there’s that.

  94. Business Proposal (√) - 사내맞선 An In-house Confrontation - Released: Episodes:

If you need something to make you smile Business Proposal is the one to watch. Ahn Hyo-Seop is easy on the eyes and Shin Ha-Ri is cute and has great chemistry with him. And she’s so hilarious! It’s a lighthearted rom-com that will have you laughing out loud. I also liked the second leads Kim Min-Kyu and Seol In-Ah and the fact they had their own separate storyline.

  95. Military Prosecutor Doberman - 군검사 도베르만 - Released: Episodes:

After the lack of a good storyline for Ahn Bo-Hyun in Yumi’s Cells (am I the only one who thinks this?) I was happy to see him in MPD. I enjoyed watching this suspenseful drama that wasn’t as dark as a military drama might typically be. By that I mean it had its light moments. But ultimately it was a military story so yes, it wasn’t light fare.

  96. Abyss - 어비스 Released: Episodes:

Not gonna lie. I watched this for Ahn Hyo-Seop. Taylor did too. It was okay. If you’re an AHS fan you’ll probably watch it too. ;)

  97. Soundtrack #1 - 사운드트랙#1 Released: Episodes:

  98. One Ordinary Day - 어느날 One Day Released: Episodes:

  99. Tomorrow (√) - 내일 - Released: Episodes:

Trigger warning: Deals with suicide. That being said, it’s very well done. And hopeful. There’s a storyline that runs throughout the series of other shorter separate storylines introducing you to a multitude of characters and life situations. Yes, it’s a heavy subject but the stories make you ponder about life and death. Kim Hee-Sun stands out in this drama and she has a great ensemble cast that includes Rowoon, Yoon Ji-on, and Lee Soo-Hyuk.

  100. Iris - 아이리스 - Released: Episodes:

  101. Again My Life (√) - 어게인 마이 라이프 - Released: Episodes:

I will watch anything with Lee Joon-gi in it. I tend to like things with past lives, reincarnation, and time travel—especially when combined with some type of social justice—so this one was a hit for me.

  102. My Liberabtion Notes - 나의 해방일지 My Liberation Diary Released: Episodes:

I think I’m in the minority in the fact I did not care for this K-drama. It did introduce me to Son Seok-gu and his character is probably the only one I found interesting. Otherwise, I found it pretty depressing.

  103. Our Blues - 우리들의 블루스 - Released: 4/9/2022 Episodes: 20

Great ensemble cast including Lee Byung-hun, Shin Min-A, Kim Woo-Bin, Han Ji-Min, and Lee Jung-Eun among others. Set in Jeju Island. It took me a bit to get into this K-drama that deals with depression and other mental health issues. But it’s worth taking the time to let the stories of all the characters pull you in.

  104. Empress Ki FF - 기황후 Released: Episodes:

I love Ha Ji-Won and Ji Chang-Wook and maybe if this drama had been 16 episodes I could’ve handled it but it just went on and on repeating similar situations. After episode 30 I did a lot of fast forwarding and I think I even skipped to the last two episodes just so I could know how it ended. 51 episodes. IMHO there’s a reason K-dramas are successful with the 16-20 episode format.

  105. Eve - 이브 Released: Episodes:

  106. Confidential Assignment - 공조 Cooperate (MOVIE) Released:

  107. In the Soop: Friendcation (REALITY SHOW) Released: Episodes:

Watching this with Taylor and Chlo while we were in Korea made it extra special. It features the Wooga Squad. Park Seo-Jun, Choi Woo-Sik, Kim Tae-Hyung (V), Park Hyung-Sik, and Peak Boy. What I love about PD Na’s variety shows is that they give you a glimpse into the featured celebrities without a script. It’s real-life based on whatever situation he’s put them in. This is a little vacation for this group of friends who consider themselves family. Wholesome and heartwarming. 💜

  134. Love is For Suckers - 얼어죽을 연애따위

  135. Singles Inferno S2 - 솔로지옥(REALITY SHOW) - Released: Episodes:

I initially ignored this show because of ABC’s Bachelor and Bachelorette especially since the title made it sound like the Korean version of those shows. It’s not. If you like K-dramas you’ll like this Korean reality series. It was one more confirmation of why I watch Korean content. I have not seen season one.

  136. The Interest of Love - 사랑의 이해 - Released: Episodes:

In the interest of love (and your sanity)—I don’t recommend The Interest of Love.

  137. Secret Love (FF) Released: Episodes:

  139. Love to Hate You - Released: Episodes:

  140. Physical 100 (REALITY SHOW) - Released: Episodes:

Another show I had no interest in watching because I’m not into the gym scene. But true to other Korean reality shows it quickly captured my heart. The contestants ranged from a dancer to MMA fighters. Both men and women. And once again. It’s nothing like an American reality show. I binged this in 24-48 hours and loved it.

  141. Strangers Again - Released: Episodes:

  142. Stairway to Heaven Released: Episodes:

I had to watch this old classic K-drama that Kim Ju-Meok is watching in Crash Landing On You. They don’t make K-dramas the same way these days. The music at times was almost annoying for me—and I think K-dramas are masters at using music—but they over-used it to draw out scenes with no dialogue. It felt long and didn’t keep my attention. I started fast-forwarding maybe half to three-quarters of the way through the series. The best part for me was recognizing the elements pointed out in CLOY.

  143. Crash Course in Romance (√) - Released: Episodes:

  144. Mr. Queen - Released: Episodes:

I was wracking my brain as to where I’d seen the female lead. I really liked her but couldn’t place where I’d seen her before. I was so surprised to find out she was Cha Shi-a in Legend of the Blue Sea. And couldn’t be more thrilled to see her thrive as the lead female role in this (mostly) historical K-drama. It’s hilarious, heartwarming, and mysterious. The perfect K-drama. Even better because of the strong female lead.

  145. Taxi Driver (√)- Released: Episodes:

I avoided this one for a while because of the title. It made me think of the Jodi Foster movie (that I’ve never seen) and I wasn’t really wanting to watch a show of that nature. But when promotion started happening for season two and everyone was so excited I thought I should check it out. It made me a fan of Lee Je-Hoon (who I also liked in Move to Heaven) and I was glad to see Kim Eui-Sung in a role where I didn’t hate him (because he plays a good bad guy). Second K-drama to highlight the range Shin Jae-Ha is capable of showing. Another great ensemble cast. I will always be a fan of shows where there are characters fighting for justice.

  148. Divorce Attorney Shin - Released: Episodes:

  149. Our Blooming Youth - Released: Episodes:

  150. The Glory S2 Released: Episodes:

  151. Taxi Driver S2 Released: Episodes:
A couple of episodes in season two had higher ratings than season one episodes. I liked season two okay (because I like all the main characters), but not better than season one. This season pretty much started where the first left off. But midway through it started focusing mainly on one storyline which meant less variety. It was good but I liked the first season better.

  152. Peak Time (√) (REALITY SHOW) - Released: Episodes:

This show really opened my eyes to the world of K-pop. When it comes to K-pop, for many, it brings to mind boy groups with a lot of members who dance and sing but aren’t Grammy-worthy. If you like K-pop. If you don’t like K-pop. Watch this show. From beginning to end. You can skip the parts where the host is telling the audience how they can vote (because you can’t vote anymore). Otherwise, watch it all. And then tell me what you think of K-pop. I watched this by myself. Then got my kids (28 & 30) to watch it. Then my sister-friend’s family (including my nephews who are 12 & 13). Everyone I’ve recommended this show to has loved it.

  153. Jinny’s Kitchen (REALITY SHOW) - Released: Episodes:

If I’m honest, I wanted more from this show. Youn Yuh-Jung is gone and Kim Tae-Hyung (BTS’ V) joins the cast. I love that it’s unscripted but I felt like having a celebrity cast was almost wasted because Park Seo-Jun and V were hidden away in the kitchen most of the time. If you’re a fan of the cast or previous season of Youn’s Kitchen or Youn’s Stay you’ll probably enjoy it. But if you’re like me you’ll also be frustrated. I want to offer my services for the next season to help with on-site promotion. I’ll do more than hand out fliers PD Nah!

  154. Queen Maker - Released: Episodes:

  155. Joseon Attorney: A Morality - 조선변호사 Joseon Lawyer Released: 3/31/2023 Episodes: 16

This K-drama was a bit slow to start for me—partly because I didn’t know what to expect. I tuned in for Woo Do-Hwan and I was not disappointed. It really shows the range Do-Hwan is able to portray in his roles. If you can’t cry you’re probably not going to have a successful career as an actor in Korea. There is one scene that broke my heart watching Woo Do-Hwan but I was so impressed with his portrayal since much of the time his character comes across as not very serious. I appreciated the friendship between WDH and Lee Ky-Sung’s characters. They played well off each other. It was nice to see Bona as the female lead.

  156. Dr. Romantic - 낭만닥터 김사부 Romatic Doctor Teacher Kim - Released: 11/7/16 Episodes: 20

As a fan of Yeo Yoon-Seok and Kim Min-Jae, I had to watch this first season when I saw chatter about Dr. Romantic 3. I quickly became a fan of Han Suk-Kyu (aka Dr. Romantic). This K-drama (and series) has a great ensemble cast—many of whom I recognized and like. If you want to watch more than one season, this is a good show to get invested in. Romance as we typically think isn’t the main focus but rather the definition suggestive of an idealized view of reality.

  157. Dr. Romantic S2 - 낭만닥터 김사부2 Romatic Doctor Teacher Kim 2 Released: 1/6/2020 Episodes: 16

Two of the leads are gone but their replacements make you hardly miss them. Ahn Hyo-Seop is who drew me to look up this K-drama to begin with. He plays a good romantic lead but I like it when his roles are more substanative like his character here, Seo Woo-Jin. Most of the rest of the cast is back and the saga continues. If you liked the first season you’ll like the second.

  158. Black Knight - 택배기사 Delivery Driver - Released: 5/12/2023 Episodes: 6

I can see how they came up with the English title—it romanticizes the lead character 5-8 more than the Korean title—which is literally his job. It’s easy to see Kim Woo-Bin as a knight (and he’s always wearing black). Kang Yu-Seok really stood out—this young actor looks like he could be BTS’ Park Jimin’s brother. I was surprised to see that he’s in three other K-dramas I’ve watched but don’t remember his character. That speaks a lot to this role. The storyline could be seen as a bit depressing but I also couldn’t help but think it could really happen. Only six episodes make it a good choice for bingeing.

  159. Dr. Cha - 닥터 차정숙 Dr. Cha Jang-Suk Released: 4/15/2023 Episodes: 16

This K-drama started out strong for me but I struggled to stay engaged as it went along. There’s a fairly significant K-adoptee storyline for one of the main characters which I’m always glad to see. I especially liked the part about him giving DNA at a local police station like I did ten months ago (to try to find family). Unfortunately, I’ve not been as lucky as he was but that’s the advantage of being a K-drama character—everything gets resolved for you.

  160. Good Bad Mother (√) - 나쁜엄마 Bad Mother Released: 4/26/2023 Episodes: 14

This was one of my top two K-dramas for 2023! I know much more about pigs than I ever thought I would since a lot of the storyline revolves around a pig farm. It’s really good. A great ensemble cast. Lee Do-Hyun is fantastic and so believable in this role. You will love, hate, and love Ra Mi-Ran in her role as Choi Kang-Ho’s mother. Ahn Eun-Jin is fast becoming one of my favorites. The two young kids, Ki So-Yu and Park Da-On, will steal your heart. How is it that Korea has such great young actors? Heartwarming and heartwrenching with lots of humorous moments.

  161. Bloodhounds - 사냥개들 Hounds - Released: 6/9/2023 Episodes: 8

The title and boxing storyline had me hesitating for a second but I like Woo Do-Hwan. This K-drama has a great bromance between Do-Hwan and Lee Sang-yi. I’m a sucker for an underdog taking on the people in power storyline. Not for the faint of heart but with only eight episodes it’s a pretty quick watch.

  162. Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo Released: Episodes:

  163. Dr. Romantic S3 - 낭만닥터 김사부3, Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim 3 - Released: 4/28/2023 Episodes: 16

Did I mention how much I like the lead character—Kim Sabu (aka Dr. Romantic) played by Han Suk-Kyu in this series? And the great ensemble cast that includes Ahn Hyo-Seop and Kim Min-Jae? Season three adds Lee Sin-Young (who I loved in Crash Landing On You) and there’s a return of a character from season one. I also really like Jin Kyung’s character who is warm and motherly. I usually see her cast as someone who is a bit conniving and greedy, but she’s completely believable as the head nurse looking out for everyone. I’m okay if this is the last in this series. I prefer to see the actors go on to play other roles than to be stuck in one character.

  164. My Perfect Stranger - I Ran Into You By Chance Released: 5/1/2023 Episodes: 16

You may recognize the male lead Kim Dong-Uk from Coffee Prince (I didn’t). The female lead Jin Ki-Joo is in Moon Lovers: Scarlett Heart Rye (which I hadn’t seen at the time I watched this series). Despite the fact I was unfamiliar with both leads I really enjoyed this time travel drama.

  165. Celebrity - Released: 6/30/2023 Episodes:

  166. Agency - 대행사 - Released: 1/7/2023 Episodes: 16

I love it when a story revolves around a strong female lead. Lee Bo-Young (who I also enjoyed in Mine) does not disappoint and she has a good ensemble cast around her. The focus of this drama is on Go Ah-In’s climb up the ladder in an advertising agency. In Korea, women in the business world have it much harder than in the U.S. I like that this drama focuses on the issues surrounding women in the workplace. If you’re looking for romance you won’t find it here. And I’m just fine with that!

  167. Just Between Lovers/Rain or Shine - 그냥 사랑하는 사이 Just Loving Each Other - Released: 12/11/2017 Episodes: 16

The Korean title is much better than either English title. Just Loving Each Other is one of my favorite Lee Jun-ho K-dramas. It feels genuine. This drama is heavy. It deals with loss, guilt, PTSD, and the effect trauma can have on one’s life. But if you like a more serious storyline then this is a good drama to check out.

  168. See You in My 19th Life (√) - 이번 생도 잘 부탁해 Please Take Care of Me This Life Too - Released: 7/17/2023 Episodes: 12

I am a fan of Ahn Bo-hyun and Shin Hye-Sun so I was glad to see them paired in this K-drama. If there’s such a thing as previous lives, would you want to know about those lives—including any trauma that goes with them? The storyline was an interesting concept about one character knowing her previous lives and how that knowlege impacts her and the people she loves. SYIM19L had a good ensemble cast which is another sign of a good drama. One thing I like about serious K-dramas is there’s usually a balance of light heartedness mixed in so it’s not all heavy. I appreciate that Shin Hye-Sun is especially good at being humorous. I’ll probably rewatch this K-drama with Taylor because she’s been an Ahn Bo-Hyun fan since Itaewon Class.

  169. Numbers - 넘버스 : 빌딩숲의 감시자들 Numbers: Watchers of the Building Forest - Released: 6/23/23 Episodes: 12

Never saw myself as someone who would be interested in accounting—or that such a topic would be a good basis for a K-drama storyline. But I liked Numbers. I would classify it as a revenge drama. A good revenge drama. With a good ensemble cast. It introduced me to Kim Myung-Su and had me thinking about The Heirs when I saw Choi Jin-hyuk. I also like a good social justice storyline that pits the underdogs against power-hungry, greedy (evil) chaebols.

  170. Nineteen to Twenty (REALITY SHOW) - Released: 7/11/2023 Episodes:

If you’ve never seen a Korean reality show this is a good one to start with. 19 is the age when Koreans graduate from high school and 20 is when they become an adult. All the cast members were born in 2004. 2023 might be the last year they all turn 20 on January 1st because Korea adopted the international age system in June 2023. I don’t think we’d ever see a show like this in the U.S. and it’s too bad. As my daughter Taylor said, this is one of the most wholesome shows we’ve ever seen. We actually watched it together as it was airing each week. I was rooting for these kids as they spent their last week of being minors together and the first week as adults. One of the best things about Korean reality shows is when they have a commentary panel who are watching it along with you. I’m literally anticipating each time they’re gonna cut to the panel to see if their reaction is similar to mine. Taylor and I want to be on one of those panels someday (never mind that we’re not famous). I told her we just need to YouTube live while we’re watching a show in real time. ;)

  171. Misaeng - 미생 Incomplete life - Released: 10/17/2014 Episodes: 20

I was drawn to this drama while watching Suchwita, the talk show by BTS’ Suga. Lead actor Lee Sung-Min was being interviewed and Suga asked which was his favorite of all the dramas he’s been in. Misaeng was his answer. Suga said it was his favorite too and he’s watched it multiple times. Lee Sung-Min’s performance in Reborn Rich was so powerful I wanted to see the drama he considered his favorite. He stars alongside Im Si-Wan (another actor I admire) in this 20-episode saga. It’s not an easy watch because it deals with how Korea’s hierarchal system impacts employees working for a large trading company. I always appreciate when K-dramas are willing to take on topics that hopefully will inspire conversation and change for the better in Korean society. It’s something I see quite often in Korean productions. Keep a box of tissues close by when you watch this one.

  172. D.P. S1 - Released: 8/27/2021 Episodes: 6

The third time’s a charm as they say. This series sat on my “started—can’t finish” list and it took me to my third try over three years to finish season one of D.P. I really like lead actor Jung Hae-In so I kept coming back. It’s not an easy watch. D.P. stands for deserter pursuit in the Korean military. While several scenarios are shown for why young men might choose to desert their military position the focus is on bullying. Technically this series is a work of fiction based on the webtoon D.P. Dog Days by showrunner Kim Bo-tong. The series was adapted by Kim and co-writer Han Jun-hee. They dramatized and drew upon some of Kim's own experiences of mandatory military service in Korea. I can’t say I enjoyed D.P. but I’m glad I finally watched it. Sometimes we need to see what we want to look away from.

  173. D.P. S2 - Released: 7/28/2023 Episodes: 6

I liked the way the characters evolved in this show. Still not an easy watch. Not gonna lie, it made me nervous for the BTS members who are enlisting one by one. Lead actor Jung Hae-in has served his required time already. The fact he even took on this role makes me feel like I’m right to be a little worried. Maybe not for BTS. Maybe their fame will protect them. But what about the everyday soldiers who don’t have someone watching their backs?

  174. King the Land Released: Episodes:

Had it not been for Lee Jun-ho I would’ve dropped this drama. It took until episode seven for me to feel like there was anything redeemable. Lots of tropes and behavior we would not let an average guy get by with—but because it’s Jun-ho playing the character, the female audience is swooning. As I said, I kept watching because I like Jun-ho, but trust me, I was not impressed with Gu Won. It’s highly unlikely someone IRL could change the way Jun-ho’s character does. I would tell my kids to get away from him fast but luckily this is K-drama land and by episode eight he has mostly redeemed himself and I could just enjoy the drama as a flawed rom-com fairytale.

  175. Weakest Hero Class 1 Released: Episodes:

Easy to watch because the episodes were only 40 minutes. Hard to watch because it deals with bullying. It baffles me that I can watch shows coming out of Korea where the first word I would use to describe it is wholesome—and then watch many other shows and see bullying like I’ve never heard of before. Of course, bullying exists in the U.S. and elsewhere too. But it’s hard to wrap my head around the level of bullying we see portrayed in K-dramas. Which many Koreans say is real. I hope shows like this are helping to shine a light on the issue (everywhere) so it stops.

  176. Zombieverse (REALITY SHOW) Released: Episodes:

This is the first Korean reality show I would hesitate to recommend. I’m not a fan of zombie shows in general but I am a fan of Ro Hong-Chul and Dex so I was curious. Early on I found myself laughing but I think the strangest thing is having no premise of what’s going on. You knew it was fake because the cast couldn’t contain their laughter many times (and obviously the zombies were a dead giveaway—pun intended!). But was it scripted? I think if they’d told us something like, this is a show where the cast is themselves but they have to try and stay away from the zombies as long as possible with no help from production—I would’ve been less confused—and enjoyed it more. I think it was probably too scripted to actually call it a reality show. The early episodes were better than the later ones. The highlight of the show is watching Dex (aka Kim Jin-Young from Singles Inferno S2). They really should’ve showcased him more. I would be sticking close to Dex in a zombie breakout or any other disaster!

  177. Unlock My Boss - Released: 7 Episodes:

  178. Bro & Marble in Dubai (REALITY SHOW) - Released: 7/21/2013 Episodes: 8

I love a good bromance. This reality show takes three sets of friends to Dubai and has them playing a real-life Monopoly type game. It stars Lee Seung Gi, Yoo Yeon Seok, Lee Dong Hwi, Ji Suk Jin, Jo Se Ho, Super Junior’s Kyuhyun, and SEVENTEEN’s Joshua and Hoshi. I was familiar with Lee Seung-Gi, Yoo Yeon-Seok, and Kyuhyun. This introduced me to Joshua and Hoshi who are quite adorable. I enjoyed watching the interaction between the three sets of friends who were from different generations. I didn’t think the game was always fair but there were some hilarious moments. You can almost never go wrong when watching a Korean reality show because you’ll find yourself smiling and laughing out loud. Taylor loved this show too :)

  179. When My Love Blooms - Released: 4/252020 Episodes:

  180. Dream (MOVIE) - Released:

  181. The Devil Judge - 악마판사 - Released: 7/3/2021 Episodes: 16

It took me a couple of times to go further than 15 minutes into the first episode because I’d get distracted by other releases and forget about it. I would put this in the category of a revenge drama. I’m not a fan of over-the-top characters so the President was just too much for me. I want to say Korea would never have a President like that but then I never thought the U.S. would either—so maybe… Hard not to miss the thought-provoking commentary on justice and how the internet and social media are driving forces behind what the public consumes and what they believe.

  182. A Time Called You - 너의 시간 속으로 Into Your Time - Released: 9/8/2023 Episodes: 12

I was excited about this K-drama because of Ahn Hyo-Seop. But it was Jeon Yeo-Bin who really caught my attention. Both leads were playing dual roles but Jeon Yeo-Bin’s characters were night and day different and she nailed them down to the most minute characteristics and nuances. If you’re like me always anticipating what’s coming next and trying to figure things out this K-drama might frustrate you a bit because it’s complicated. This is a good time-travel drama but it’ll definitely play with your mind.

  183. Familiar Wife - 아는 와이프 A Wife Who Knows - Released: 8/1/2018 Episodes: 16

This K-drama nails what happens to many marriages once kids come into the picture. Ji Sung’s character is plopped into a new life based on regrets in his current life. It’s something most of us have probably wished we could do at one time or another. But would we do it, if given the opportunity? Another good time-travel drama.

  184. My Lovely Liar - 소용없어 거짓말 It’s No Use Lying - Released: 7/31/2023 Episodes: 16

Would knowing if someone is lying be considered a superpower? I became a fan of Hwang Min-Hyun in Alchemy of Souls. I recently found out his K-pop group Nu’est is the originator of the song 요보세요 (Hello)—a song I fell in love with watching Peak Time. Kim So-Hyun was so familiar but I couldn’t place her. Turns out she is the bratty princess wannabe in The Moon Embracing the Sun. It was nice to like her character here. Lots of twists and turns in this story if you like a good mystery. Whether it’s Korean music or Korean professional soccer there’s a bit of something for everyone.

  185. Kingdom: Legendary War (REALITY SHOW) - 킹덤: 레전더리 워 - Released: 6/3/2021 Episodes: 10

My kids have been trying to get me into Ateez for the past couple of months. It’s not that I don’t think I would like them, it’s that I know I probably would. But I get too attached (I’m already ARMY and Black Rose) and I don’t have the time or emotional bandwidth to be so invested. KLW is no Peak Time but it gave me a glimpse into six very established K-pop groups. BtoB, iKON, SF9, The Boys, Stray Kids, and Ateez. They’re competing to become the King of Pop but the competition is secondary to what they learned, the experiences they had, and the unexpected friendships they made with members of the other groups. I say this all the time but Korean reality shows are not like American reality shows. There is no backstabbing, no drama, and you get a genuine feel for the “contestants.” BTW these groups are known around the globe and do not need a show like this to become famous. Don’t think you like K-pop? This is another show that really highlights how much goes into the production of K-pop numbers. There is nothing like K-pop in the West. NOTHING. And I’d challenge you to find very many artists in the West who are as hardworking and talented. And yes. KLW made me want to know more about Ateez and the other groups. Does that mean I’m now ATINY, Stay, Melody, Fantasy, The B, and IKONIC?

  186. Moving - 무빙 - Released: 8/9/2023 Episodes: 20

Click on the title for the full review.

  187. Memory - 기억 - Released: 3/18/2016 Episodes: 16

I have loved Lee Sung-Min since watching him in Reborn Rich and seeing BTS’ Suga interview him on his talk show Suchwita. He does not disappoint in this poignant K-drama dealing with Alzheimer’s. As this is Lee Jun-ho’s first K-drama I would be interested in knowing what it felt like for him to play opposite such a legendary actor like Sung-Min.

  188. Thirty But 17 - 서른이지만 열일곱입니다 I’m 30 But I’m 17 - Released: 7/23/2018 Episodes: 32 (30-minute each)

The cast for this K-drama was loaded with actors I like. Shin Hye-Sun, Ahn Hyo-Seop, and Lee Do-Hyun just to name a few. While Yang Se-Jang is only three years older than Hyo-Seop he’s playing his uncle. It took me a bit to realize I knew him from Dr. Romantic 2. Maybe it’s because the two were peers in the latter. I enjoyed this as a drama that dealt with a lot of trauma, but I also enjoyed just being able to see some favorite actors before they were as well-known as they are now.

  189. Miraculous Brothers - 기적의 형제 Miracle Brother - Released: 6/28/2023 Episodes: 16

I’ve heard zero chatter about this K-drama. Before I watched it or in the last couple of weeks since I finished it. Which is probably why I didn’t even start it till six weeks after the finale aired. But I definitely enjoyed it. Time travel is a favorite plot in many K-dramas and I will probably never tire of it. I wasn’t immediately drawn to the lead character because his personality is a bit off-putting. The premise and the introduction of the other lead hooked me. If you like a good mystery, you’ll like this one.

  190. Doona - 이두나! - Released: 10/20/2023 Episodes: 9

Doona (Bae Suzy) is a former member of an idol group. Lee Won-Jun (Yang Se-Jang) is an ordinary university student. The two end up as housemates where Doona lives on the first floor and Won-Jun lives with a couple of roommates in the upper level. Despite the fact that Won-Jun’s best friend is a major Doona fan, he doesn’t appear to initially recognize his famous housemate who is standoffish and smokes like a chimney. I am a fan of Yang Se-Jang and this drama is probably not too far off in portraying the issues that many idols face with that double-edged sword known as fame. I didn’t feel like Doona’s backstory was developed enough to make Won-Jun fall for her after flatly turning her down. But I’m hopeful that the overall storyline is an indication that there are people who can help make needed changes to improve the process of becoming and maintaining the “idol” status.

  191. CEO-dol Mart - Released: Episodes:

  192. My Country: The New Age - 나의 나라 - Released: 10/04/2019 Episodes: 16

I wasn’t sure who was supposed to be the lead in this drama featuring Yang Se-Jong and Woo Do-Hwan. I found myself torn between the two lifelong friends, Seo Hwi and Nam Seon-Ho because not everything is black and white when it comes to good and bad. Great ensemble cast that includes Jang Hyuk as Prince Jeongan (aka Yi Bang-Won). This historical drama set during the transition of the Goryeo to Joseon dynasties may be fictional, but it’s interesting to ponder the actual history of Korea while watching.

  193. Twinkling Watermelon - 반짝이는 워터멜론 - Released: 09/25/2023 Episodes: 16

What is a twinkling watermelon? Never mind the title. This is a fun watch. High school students start a band. A band that I’m pretty sure The Rose is the inspiration for—the Coldplay reference is my final evidence. A high school student who is the only hearing person in his family of four feels pressure from his deaf parents and travels back in time to when his parents were teens. How differently would we see our parents if we could all travel back to when they were teens? We may not be able to, but watching Ha Eun-Gyeol’s journey can’t help but raise some interesting questions. Nice ensemble cast that includes Seol In-A, Choi Hyun-Wook, and iKON’s Koo Jun-hoe. Jeong Hyun-Jun was excellent as the young Ha Eun-Gyeol. I caught a couple of time-related mistakes when they were back in the 90s—did anyone else?

  194. My Dearest - 연인 Lover - Released: 08/04/2023 Episodes: 21

This was one of my top two dramas of 2023. Early on it was very reminiscent of Gone With the Wind. Yoo Gil-Chae was Joseon Scarlett O’Hara to Lee Jang-Hyun’s Rhett Butler. Kyung Eun-Ae was the kind Melanie and Nam Yeon-Joon the spineless Ashley. However, the deeper multidimensional characters and storylines made me forget about the early comparison to GWTW. Set during the Qing invasion (Jan. 3, 1637 to Feb. 24, 1637) it gives you a glimpse into Korean history. This is one of the few times I feel like the English title fits more than the Hangeul. Min Nam-Koong was excellent as Lee Jang-Hyun. Ahn Eun-Jin is quickly becoming one of my favorite actors (she was also in my other 2023 top two dramas). Kim Yun-Woo was captivating as Ryang Eum. This drama deserves all the accolades and awards it’s receiving.

  195. Castaway Diva - 무인도의 디바 Diva on a Desert Island - Released: 10/28/23 Episodes: 12

Feel-good drama you can watch with the whole family. Park Eun-Bin is getting a lot of attention for her singing (which she should!), but the young actor Moon Woo-Jin is the one who caught my attention. He’s an actor whom any avid K-drama fan has seen many times as we’ve watched him grow up via so many characters. He did a superb job portraying the young Ki-ho! I also found Chae Jong-Hyeop who portrays Kang Bo-Geol to be very charming. This drama deals with domestic abuse but overall it’s very heartwarming.

  196. Perfect Marriage Revenge Released: Episodes:

  197. Tail of the Nine-Tailed Released: Episodes:

  198. True Beauty - 여신강림 Released: 12/9/20 Episodes: 16 Network: tvN

  199. Jinny’s Kitchen: Communication Retreat Released: Episodes:

  200. The Matchmakers Released: Episodes:

  201. Heartbeat - 가슴이 뛴다 - My Heart is Racing Released: 6/6/23 Episodes: 16

I’ve been a fan of Taecyeon’s ever since Dream High. He played his character in Vincenzo almost too well. In this drama, he’s a vampire who wants to be human. To know the feeling of a heartbeat in love. I’m not into vampires. There are a lot of ways a story about a vampire can go. This drama took something that could lean towards cheesy and made it heartfelt.

  202. Gyeongseong Creature - 경성크리처 - Released: 12/22/23 Episodes: 10

A monster/creature storyline isn’t my thing but as a fan of Park Seo-Jun there’s no way I wasn’t going to watch this K-drama. Took me until episode two to be fully hooked, then binged the first seven episodes in less than 24 hours and eagerly awaited the drop of the final three on January 5th. Once I learned the monster-like creature represents the experiments the Japanese did on thousands of Koreans during their occupation, I thought it was a creative way to portray the atrocities that went on during this period of history between the two countries. Looking forward to season two.

  203. The Story of Park’s Marriage Contract Released: 11/24/23 Episodes: 12

If you like time travel and past lives, this K-drama takes advantage of both, with a bit of a twist on the marriage contract plot. The two leads are likable with good chemistry between them. Same goes for their two assistants. Nice balance of romance, mystery, and humor set mostly in the current day but with a few jumps back to the Joseon era.

  204. Boys Planet (REALITY SHOW) Released: 2/2/23 Episodes: 12 Network: Mnet

  205. Death Games - 이재, 곧 죽습니다 Lee Jae, I'm going to die soon Released: 12/15/23 Episodes: 8 Network: TVing

Trigger warning: Deals with suicide. I found this drama to be pretty riveting. I’m always amazed that taking one’s life is considered a sin by many religions and societies. When Choi Yee-Jae takes his life he must die 12 more times by inhabiting different bodies to avoid going to hell. This drama makes you ponder all types of questions related to life and death. Seo In-Guk is excellent in this drama. There are a lot of wonderful cameos by some of your favorite Korean actors. The only thing I took issue with is the fact Death (portrayed by Park So-Dam) uses a gun to shoot Choi Yee-Jae each time he dies. Because Korea has strict gun laws I found this an interesting choice. Because the U.S. has major issues with gun violence I’m not a fan of guns for no real reason. IMHO this was an unnecessary gratuitous violent way to “kill” him each time.

  206. Singles Inferno S3 (REALITY SHOW) Released: 12/12/23 Episodes: 11

As a fan of season two, I was highly anticipating the new season. But I was so disappointed I don’t know if I’ll tune in for season four. Instead of letting the men and women get to know each other before they’re sent to Paradise Island, they send them almost immediately. It also seemed like the format was intentionally trying to create friction between everyone. As we saw in season two first impressions gave way to real interaction on the island and minds were changed. This season was also very shallow. The conversations we were privy to revolved around, “What did you think of me, what did you think of her, am I pretty, will you pick me again, etc. etc.” We didn’t hear them talk about their jobs or interests with each other. I hope this was just an editing thing and that they did actually get beyond their egos while talking with each other. I also didn’t like that the contestants were forced to go to Paradise Island. I much prefer the format that only allows them to go if they choose each other. The best part of this season was Jin Young—the previous contestant in season two. His commentary was almost always spot-on and so insightful. I would say something to my daughter Taylor as we were watching and two seconds later Jin would say the same thing! As a recovering viewer of ABC’s Bachelor and Bachelorette, I much prefer the endearingness of season two.

  207. A Good Day to Be a Dog - 오늘도 사랑스럽개 It’s a Lovely Day Too Released: 10/14/23 Episodes: 14 Network: MBC

I wasn’t sure what to expect with this show but the first half of the series was pretty cute. It introduced me to Cha Eun-Woo (which made me go looking for more of his dramas). Halfway through it started going in a darker direction, which isn’t necessarily bad, but it was confusing. For me, there were too many holes in the backstory of the past lives. IMHO you should stop after the second to the last episode. The finale just had me shaking my head.

  208. Stray Kids (REALITY SHOW) Released: 10/17/17 Episodes: 10 Network: Mnet

Getting to know the members of a group always makes me more interested in the group. This show from 2017 let’s you see some of the process of choosing the members for this very popular K-pop band. They all look so young! But it’s interesting to compare with where they’re at now. This is another show that shows all the hard work that goes into becoming and idol and just how talented these members are. If you watch at the link provided make sure you have an ad block extension on your browser.

  209. Melancholia - 멜랑꼴리아 Released: 6/26/23 Episodes: 16 Network: tvN

I watched this because of Lee Do Hyun and he did not disappoint. I wasn’t comfortable with how they dealt with everything in the storyline (because we’ve seen too many real-life scenarios where it goes wrong). As the title suggests it’s not exactly a cheery story, but interesting nonetheless.

  210. My Demon (√) - 마이 데몬 Released: 11/24/23 Episodes: 16 Network: SBS

I wasn’t in a hurry to watch this drama when it first came out even though I’ve liked Kim Yu-Jeong ever since she was in the Moon Embracing the Sun. Luckily I had a hole in my watching schedule and started it several weeks into the show. I found myself pleasantly surprised by Song Kang. I am now his fan too. The chemistry between these two leads is strong. Another drama with a good ensemble cast. Lee Sang-Yi is becoming a favorite and it’s always nice to see Kim Hae-Sook. Nice balance of humor amongst what could’ve been a very dark topic. Keeps you guessing throughout the entire 16 episodes. Thought-provoking till the very end. I watched this drama twice almost back-to-back. It’s rare I can watch something again so soon but I knew my daughter Taylor would like it so within a week of it ending she and I started it again. We breezed through 16 episodes in less than three weeks.

  211. Welcome to Samdal-ri - 웰컴투 삼달리 Released: 12/2/23 Episodes: 16 Network: JTBC

I love Ji Chang-Wook AND Shin Hae-Sun so tuning into this K-drama was a no-brainer. The pace is a bit slower but it’s got a nice ensemble cast and is primarily based in Jeju Island. There’s humor, mystery, romance, and the ever-challenging dynamics surrounding longtime friendships and family relationships—a little bit of everything. Without giving anything away (stop reading if you want zero info on the ending)—it had a very satisfying finale. Honestly, sometimes a finale is my least favorite episode or it frustrates me with what closure they give me, but this one was good.

  212. My ID is Gangnam Beauty - 내 아이디는 강남미인 Released: 7/27/18 Episodes: 16 Network: JTBC

  213. Rookie Historian Goo Hae Ryeong - 신입사관 구해령 Released: 7/17/19 Episodes: 20 Network: MBC

Cha Eun-Woo led me to this drama but Shin Se-Kyeong is truly the lead as Goo Hae-Ryeong, one of the first female historians in Joseon. Even though this is not a true story it makes you contemplate exactly what it means to keep an accurate account of history. Much is fictionalized for the sake of telling the story but when I watch historical dramas from the Joseon period it makes me wonder what the kings and their advisors were really like. Is it my imagination, or is the Left State Councillor usually running the show and always greedy for power? This drama takes on the changing role of women during the Joseon period as well as the influence of the West. Ironically these are topics Korea is still grappling with today in the 21st century. Cha Eun-Woo’s Prince Dowon is a different character than I’ve seen him play. It was nice to see him in a role that allowed him to smile a lot.

  214. Marry My Husband - 내 남편과 결혼해줘 Released: 1/1/24 Episodes: 16 Network: tvN

It’s nice to see Park Min-Young get real in this role. The long hair, makeup, and clothes we’re used to seeing her in are gone when the series begins. Very refreshing. Na In-Woo’s Yoo Ji-Hyeok is the perfect antidote to Park Min-Hwan. I especially liked the way they revealed some vital information in episode six (no spoilers here). I enjoyed the lightheartedness of the first half more than the darker second half. The darker turn seemed less believable but when you’re talking revenge-drama I guess you can’t always have likable. Definitely a good watch!

  215. My Happy Ending - 나의 해피엔드 My Happy End Released: 12/30/23 Episodes: 16 Network: TV Chosun

This was not an easy watch for me. The flow was off, the character development lacking, and it just seemed all over the place. Whether something is good or bad is subjective. I love a good fantasy. Done right it can make anyone believe anything—or at least wish it was real. But, if I’m questioning everything I’m seeing it takes me out of the story. That’s how it felt for the entire series for me. My happy ending was when this drama was over.

  216. Sisyphus - 시지프스: the myth Released: 2/17/21 Episodes: 16 Network: JTBC

Not sure why I didn’t watch this drama when it came out but better late than never. It kept me on the edge of my seat almost the entire time. Park Shin-Hye is great in this action role—she should do more action roles. I’ve liked Cho Seung-Woo since he caught my eye in Divorce Attorney Shin. The time-traveling apocalyptic storyline resonated with me even more since seeing IU’s Love Wins All MV. Netflix calls this A time-twisting sci-fi thriller. I agree!

  217. My Name is Loh Kiwan (MOVIE) - 로기완 Released: 3/1/24

I found this movie to be a bit disappointing. Maybe something was lost in the translation from the novel to the screen. There wasn’t enough character development to make me invested or care deeply about the characters. I did relate to Loh Kiwan when he was trying to prove his identity. I’ve had similar issues trying to obtain an F4 Visa in Korea because of a lack of proof that I was once a citizen of Korea.

  218. Dr. Slump - 닥터슬럼프 Released: 1/27/24  Episodes: 16 Network: JTBC

Check out my review on Instagram LIVE

  219. Flex x Cop - 재벌X형사 Chaebol Detective Released: 1/26/24 Episodes: 16 Network: SBS

The Korean title is better than the English one (which gave me no reason to want to watch). But if Ahn Bo-Hyun is in it, I will check it out. I liked it from the first episode. There’s a great twist early on which sets the tone for the rest of the drama. Park Ji-Hun (Yumi’s Cells & Reborn Rich) plays a character completely different from what I’ve seen her do before. It was a nice ensemble cast, there was humor, mystery, and action. This is a good one for men who may not be familiar with K-dramas. Season two has already been greenlit.

  220. Build Up - 빌드업 (REALITY SHOW) Released:  1/26/24 Episodes: 10 Network: Mnet & tvN

I had high hopes for this survival show when I first heard about it but it was not easy to find here in the U.S. With three episodes to go I realized Mnet was showing it live on their YouTube channel with subtitles but they hid the shows so if you didn’t catch it live you have to go to the dark side (click on show link). The competition starts with 40 contestants, many of whom have already debuted. From idols to solo artists, models, and trainees all participated, including members of WEi, BDC, VANNER, UP10TION, JUST B, KNK, AB6IX, CIX, ONE PACT, Newkidd, and A.C.E. Judges included Lee Seok Hoon, Baekho, Seo Eunkwang, Solar, Wendy, Kim Jaehwan, Seungkwan, and Lim Seul Ong. The goal was to create a vocal boy group with four members through a series of missions. It gave you a nice glimpse into each contestant which is one reason I enjoy Korean reality TV. I enjoyed it until the last two episodes. The songs were not chosen by the contestants like the other rounds and IMHO the performances were lacking—not at the level of the other rounds. I feel like the producers got too involved in the semi-finals and finals which didn’t allow us to see the contestants in the same way. The project vocal boy group will be active for two years.

  221. Doctor Prisoner - 닥터 프리즈너 Released: 3/20/2019 Episodes: 32 Network: KBS2

I watched this because of Min Nam-Koong who I discovered in My Dearest. The 32 episodes are only 30 minutes so it’s more like 16. However, it would’ve been better with 12-14 because it felt repetitive. This revenge drama pushes the line when it comes to getting justice. Are chaebols as powerful as they’re portrayed in K-dramas? Choi Won-Young is another great example of an actor I associate with being a good guy but who portrayed the antagonist quite convincingly. I haven’t decided what I think of Kim Byung-Chul’s smile. He was evil in Goblin, annoying in Dr. Cha, and conniving as Seon Min-Sik.

  222. Wedding Impossible - 웨딩 임파서블 Released:  2/26/24 Episodes: 12 Network: tvN

The premise of this drama is a third-generation chaebol gets his good friend (who’s a woman) to be his fake fiance because he can’t inherit the company without getting married—but he’s gay. I appreciate screenwriters who want to open people’s eyes to be more accepting. However, the character development and storyline for Lee Do-Han were lacking. His being gay was primarily a vehicle for the leads—his brother Lee Ji-han (Moon Sang-Min) and his friend Na A-Jeong. I also didn’t find the story of his brother falling for the fake fiancé believable as presented. While Na A-Jeong pushes back against the system as she tries to find her way in life, the character lacks emotion. I didn’t see a reason for Ji-han to be drawn to her. But if you liked Moon Sang-Min (Grand Prince Seongnam) in Under the Queen’s Umbrella this is a chance to see him play a lead role.

  223. The Impossible Heir - 로얄로더 Royal Leader Released: 2/28/24 Episodes: 12 Network: Disney+ (Hulu)

I have been a fan of Lee Jae-Uk since Alchemy of Souls. His first lead role since AOS as Han Tae-O did not disappoint. This drama is more serious and leans toward being a bit dark with a lot of mystery and adventure. It could be considered a revenge drama but just when you think you have something figured out it’ll take a twist. I was glad that they didn’t force the romance storyline. It played a role but it didn’t dominate the story.

  224. Wonderful World - 원더풀월드 Released: 3/1/24 Episodes: 14 Network: MBC

This doesn’t drop in the U.S. on Hulu until April 24th but all 14 episodes will be available. This Cha Eun-Woo drama is a bit of a different character than what we’re used to seeing him play which is a nice change. It fits into the revenge category but has a lot of twists and turns.

  225. Why Her - 왜 오수재인가 (Why Oh Soo-jae) Released: 6/2/22 Episodes: 16 Network: SBS

Hwang In-Yeop. Finally a lead role! He first caught my attention in the reality series Young Actors Retreat but loved him as Han Seo-Jun in True Beauty. It centers around TK Law firm and a law school with students who all want to land a job at TK. When it comes to power and money this drama is full of greedy people who will stop at nothing to get what they want. Even though outrageous it made me wonder how much truth is woven into these storylines. I was surprised to realize Seo Hyun-Jin is the actor from the first season of Dr. Romantic because the two roles are completely different. She was quite convincing as a powerhouse attorney. Lots of mystery and intrigue that will keep you guessing.

  226. Queen of Tears - 눈물의 여왕 Released: 3/9/24 Episodes: 16 Network: tvN

This drama shattered tvN’s viewership record with its finale. But if you haven’t seen Crash Landing On You—the drama formerly in the top spot—watch that one first. Why? Screenwriter Park Ji-Eun who wrote both, dropped some great nuggets in the second from the first. Kim Ji-Won and Kim Soo-Hyun were perfectly cast as Hong Hae-In and her husband Baek Hyun-Woo. It’s an interesting premise to have the storyline revolve around a married couple trying to find their way back to each other. I would’ve liked to see more of their past—it felt like there were still unanswered questions. Without giving spoilers—the finale was very satisfying. The OST is beautiful and features songs by Crush, BSS (Seventeen subgroup), and Kim Soo-Hyun. I have a few of the songs in two of my playlists.

  227. Hide - 하이드 Released: 3/23/24 Episodes: 12 Network: JTBC

  228. Shining Solo (REALITY SHOW) - Released: 3/11/24 Episodes: 10 Network: SBS

Korean reality shows are a great way to get to know the people they feature. I had not even heard of the K-pop group Treasure but this show was adorable. The first five episodes feature half the group and the last five feature the other five members. While it’s advertised as a dating show it’s not a dating show in the way we usually imagine. It gives you a glimpse into the personalities (aka charms) of these young men who’ve spent years training to be idols and how it has impacted their social skills when they’re just being themselves amongst strangers. Many people criticize the no-dating policy of agencies. But when you consider how much time, effort, and yes—money—has been invested in training—I think it’s reasonable to limit dating up to a certain point. Many a band has broken up because of a girlfriend. When your actions (hormones) can impact many other members I think agreeing to a limited amount of date-free time isn’t necessarily a bad thing. If you enjoy smiling watch this show!

STARTED — CAN’T FINISH

Many of these titles are going to be controversial. My general rule of thumb is to give a K-drama three to four episodes before bailing on it. I will admit some of these I didn’t even get that far. Others I’ve come back multiple times but still haven’t been able to continue. There are a few dramas that were on this list below that I came back to and finished (they were moved to the main list). And truth be told there are a few on the list above that I kind of wish I hadn’t finished. Feel free to tell me in the comments why I should give any of these titles another chance!

  1. When the Camellia Blooms

  2. Hi Bye Mama

  3. Mystic Pop-up Bar

  4. Reply 1988

I’ve tried three times and bailed 1/4 way through episode four on my last attempt. I really want to like it because everyone else does but for some reason, it’s not pulling me in. Who knows maybe I’ll try a fifth time when there’s a lull in my schedule.

  5. Save Me

  6. Midnight Furry (MOVIE)

I tried twice but it’s just too dark for me. The second time was with Taylor who begged me to watch with her because she loves Woo Do-Hwan. Turns out she couldn’t stand to see WDH in such an evil setting either.

  7. I’m Sorry I Love You

  8. Mouse

  9. Dear My Friends

  10. Backstreet Rookie

I love both leads Ji Chang-Wook and Kim Yu-Jung but I just couldn’t get into this series. It’s the leads that could possibly draw me back one day.

  11. My Name

  12. Chief of Staff

  13. Designated Survivor

The Korean version didn’t live up to the American version. Ironically the American version is probably one of the last series I watched before I stopped watching American TV.

  14. Goodbye Summer (MOVIE)

  15. Sound of Magic

I’m a huge Ji Chang-Wook fan but this was just too quirky for me. I gave it 3-4 episodes before I bailed.

  16. Law Cafe

  17. Cafe Minamdang

  18. Money Heist: Korea - Joint Economic Area- 종이의 집: 공동경제구역 Paper House: Common Economic Zone

  19. DoDoSolSolLaLaSol

  20. The Heavenly Idol

I really liked Kim Min-Kyu in Business Proposal but his character and the storyline were just too quirky and unbelievable for me.

  21. Secret Romantic Guesthouse

  22. Bora Deborah

One of the few I was watching for the first time with Taylor. Neither one of us wanted to keep going after episode two or three. That usually means we don’t find the characters likable—or believable. We don’t have to find everything likable but at least make it plausible.

  23. My Mister

So many people like this K-drama but I found it to be really depressing. Maybe I’ll go back and try again since I know it’s popular.

  24. The Real Has Come

I gave it until maybe episode 12 but thought it was dragging with a lot of repetition. When I checked to see how many more episodes were left and found out there were 50 episodes I immediately stopped watching.

  25. Mask Girl

I dropped this after only two episodes—if even that. I just didn’t have a desire to watch this dark story. Not that there wasn’t some truth in what it was portraying. I just didn’t have the desire to take it in.

  26. Destined With You

With 10 minutes left of the tenth episode Taylor and I dropped this. A phone call interrupted us and after the brief break when we asked if we wanted to keep going, we both said absolutely not. We love Rowoon (Taylor was literally swooning over him) and I liked Jo Bo-Ah in Military Prosecutor Doberman (so it wasn’t about the actors) but there was just not enough to make us even care about their characters. Why did the two guys even like Hong-jo? Why did she like Jae-Gyeong? There was not enough development of any of the characters to make us like them let alone for them to like each other.

  27. 18 Again

Pretty sure it’s a remake of the movie by the same title with Matthew Perry and Zach Efron but I can’t take 16 episodes of so many over-the-top scenes.

@bdkim09

and that’s on having a bad sleep schedule 😪

@bdkim09

does anyone else take a week break between shows LMAO ##kdrama
