My 2025 BTS calendar created by my daughter for Christmas—is truly the gift that keeps on giving. Flipping to March not only signifies one step closer to spring—it’s also SUGA’s birthday month!
I’m glad to have a reason to showcase BTS members because I’m tired of people who know nothing about K-pop saying they aren’t talented. These are people who know nothing about BTS as a group or its members as individuals. BTS detractors say they’re not Grammy-worthy. But I’ve got receipts that show otherwise.
These posts barely mention what I personally think about each of the seven members. I’m pretty much just spewing facts. Information that is readily available to anyone if they care to look. I’m just saving you time by putting it all in one place.
Early Life and Beginnings
Born on March 9, 1993, in Daegu, South Korea, Min Yoon Gi developed a passion for music and storytelling long before becoming SUGA of BTS. Inspired by hip-hop legends like Stony Skunk and Epik High, he set his sights on becoming a rapper and producer, laying the foundation for his future in music.
Yoon Gi was composing beats and writing lyrics by his early teens (despite his parents’ disapproval), eventually joining the underground rap scene under the name "Gloss." He became a part of the hip-hop crew D-Town, where he honed his skills in music production and rapping. His early work included producing the track "518-062", a politically charged song about the Gwangju Uprising.
The BTS Journey
In 2010, Min Yoon Gi was the second member chosen for BTS. Originally brought on as a rapper and producer, Yoon Gi never expected, nor wanted, to dance—something he had to learn during his three years of intense training. He debuted with BTS on June 13, 2013, in their debut track ‘No More Dream.’ His stage name, SUGA, came from his love of basketball, specifically the shooting guard position. SUGA stood out for his sharp lyricism and intricate production. As BTS’ music evolved, so did his contributions, with tracks like ‘Tomorrow,’ ‘Boyz with Fun,’ and ‘Baepsae’ showcasing his ability to blend social commentary with addictive beats."
Establishing Himself as a Writer, Producer and Solo Artist
SUGA quickly gained recognition not only as a rapper but also as a talented producer and songwriter. He played a major role in shaping BTS’ sound, with credits on hit songs like I Need U, Run, and Blood Sweat & Tears.
In 2016, SUGA dropped his first solo mixtape as Agust D, a raw and unapologetic project diving into mental health, fame, and personal struggles. The name Agust D comes from spelling SUGA backward, with DT representing Daegu Town—a nod to his underground rap roots in Daegu. From the start, the mixtape delivered hard-hitting tracks like The Last and Give It to Me, earning praise for its fearless lyricism and brutally honest storytelling.
SUGA is widely recognized for his raw, introspective songwriting, often addressing mental health struggles, depression, social justice, and personal hardships. His ability to weave deeply personal narratives with broader societal issues has made his music resonate with ARMY worldwide.
Mental Health & Depression
SUGA has been one of the most open members of BTS when it comes to discussing mental health. His lyrics frequently explore themes of anxiety, depression, self-doubt, and the pressure of fame. Tracks like "The Last" (from his 2016 mixtape Agust D) give a brutally honest look into his battles with depression, OCD, and social phobia. In the song, he confesses feeling trapped by expectations and struggling with his own self-worth.
In "So Far Away", also from Agust D, he speaks to the loneliness of chasing dreams, expressing the pain of feeling lost and uncertain about the future. The song's message, however, encourages listeners to keep going, reminding them that dreams are worth fighting for.
His 2020 track "Dear My Friend" (from D-2) is a haunting reflection on a friendship lost to mental illness and poor life choices. It highlights the harsh realities of how mental health can affect relationships and personal paths.
Societal Pressure & Social Justice
SUGA also tackles broader social issues, including the pressures of Korean society. "28", from D-2, reflects on the struggles of growing up and the existential crisis of adulthood, touching on how society often forces individuals into a rigid mold.
With BTS, he has contributed to songs like "Baepsae" (Silver Spoon), which criticizes generational inequality, and "Am I Wrong", which calls out political and societal corruption.
Breaking Stigmas
SUGA’s willingness to address mental health openly is significant, particularly in South Korea, where the stigma surrounding such topics remains strong. By sharing his struggles through music and interviews, he has helped normalize conversations around mental health, inspiring ARMY to seek support and prioritize self-care.
His lyrics aren’t just songs—they're anthems for those struggling in silence. Whether through his work as Agust D or within BTS, SUGA continues to use his platform to shed light on important issues, proving that music can be both a form of personal healing and a powerful voice for change.
Min Yoon Gi is a full member of the Korea Music Copyright Association (KOMCA). As of May 2024, 169 songs have been attributed to Suga as a writer and composer.
