When you’re traveling to a foreign country, one of the most stressful things is figuring out how to get from point A to point B. The first destination to tackle when you land in Korea is getting from Incheon International Airport to Seoul.
Korea is known for having great public transportation and taxis are cheap compared to the U.S. There are also airport bus limousine services and rental cars. But not all options are equal.
Incheon International Airport is 29.5 miles (47.5 km) from Seoul Station. With no traffic, you’re looking at a minimum of 40-45 minutes. But Seoul is comparable to New York City—is there even a thing such as “no traffic”? That drive can easily turn into 1.5 to 2+ hours depending on the time of day.
Renting a car is an added expense you don’t need given how affordable the public transit system and taxis are. Remember, if you’re driving yourself, you’ll need to be able to navigate signs in Korean and GPS apps. And parking in Seoul is a whole different issue—good luck finding a spot!
The quickest, easiest, and most affordable way to get to Seoul from Incheon Airport is AREX express train. It also happens to be quite nice.
Quickest
Unlike a taxi, limousine, subway, or rental car, the AREX express train travels non-stop between Incheon Airport and Seoul Station in 43-45 minutes. Even during rush hour. After a 13+ hour flight, the less you have to sit the better. You’re probably ready to get to your lodging so you can sleep or freshen up to go out and eat that delicious Korean food you’ve been dreaming about.
Departures are every 20–40 minutes from 5:15 AM to 10:48 PM (check schedule for any changes).
Easiest
You can purchase a (discounted) AREX voucher online through Klook before you even leave home. How simple is that? Not to mention reassuring. One less thing to worry about when you land in a foreign country you’ve never been to (and probably don’t speak or read the language).
Once you purchase your ticket from Klook, you’ll get an email with your AREX voucher with instructions on three different ways to exchange your vouchcer.
- Activate on the Klook app
- Activate on the AREX website
- Activate at the AREX station ticket kiosks at the airport.
The Klook app on your mobile phone is the quickest and easiest!
You activate your ticket by reserving your train. You can do this up to 2 months before your departure date. But once you reserve your train, this cannot be changed. For arrivals I recommend you wait until you’ve cleared customs so you know you’ll actually have time to catch the train you reserve. If you reserved a SIM or WiFi device at the airport, it could take longer than anticipated so you may want to wait to activate until you’re done picking it up.
If you activate via the Klook app you get a QR code you can scan from your mobile phone right at the entrance to AREX—no ticket to print!
There’s no need to stop at the kiosk to book your ticket, but this is still an option if you prefer. Booking through a kiosk will give you a printed ticket. Scan ticket QR code at entrance to train.
I wait to activate my ticket when arriving but I’ll activate it the night before I leave (or sooner) when departing because it’s easier to anticipate the time.
If I have a QR code in my email or on the app I will screenshot it just in case WiFi or data on my mobile phone is having issues when I need to activate my ticket. This way all I have to do is open my photos to access it (which doesn’t require internet service).
Affordable
I don’t know about you, but I love a good deal! While taxis are cheap in Korea, it’ll still cost about $50 minimum to get all the way from the airport to Seoul.
Why pay more if you don’t have to? I’ve paid as little as $5.75 via Klook for an AREX voucher from Incheon Airport to Seoul. Pricing varies depending on current deals (my most recent voucher was $7.85 USD but generally it’s at least 20% less than buying direct).
It’s quicker, easier, AND cheaper to take the AREX express train to Seoul Station and THEN get a taxi or shuttle to your accommodations. It’ll likely only run you $5-10.
The subway does go to Seoul (which is the absolute cheapest) but it is NOT express. The train will make many stops and you may have to transfer one or more times depending on where you’re going to or coming from. The subway also doesn’t have much room for luggage (especially if there are a lot of passengers), which can be a real issue if you have multiple bags. This is also the reason why I generally take a taxi from Seoul Station to my lodging.
